Sonangol considers increasing stake in Banco Comercial Português

Angolan state oil company Sonangol is considering increasing its stake in Banco Comercial Português (BCP), the largest listed bank in Portugal. The possibility arises if the Chinese group Fosun International decides to sell its position in the financial institution.

Currently, Sonangol holds a 19.9% stake in BCP and an indirect stake of approximately 16.9% in Galp Energia. Sebastião Gaspar Martins, Chairman of the Board of Sonangol, stated that any increase in the BCP position would be evaluated based on strategic alignment, expected returns, and market conditions.

However, a BCP share buyback program may require Sonangol to adjust its holding to remain below the 20% threshold, as exceeding this limit would necessitate approval from the European Central Bank.

Separately, the Portuguese stock index (PSI) enters its third-quarter earnings season. Navigator Company reported profits of 49.1 million euros for the first half of the year, a 42% decrease compared to the 85.2 million euros recorded in the same period of 2025.
