Sonarpur Arohi mountaineers record three first ascents in Ladakh
The Sonarpur Arohi mountaineering club from West Bengal successfully completed the Chang Chenmo Expedition 2026 in eastern Ladakh, summiting four mountains. The team achieved first ascents of three previously unclimbed peaks and climbed Chang Chenmo Kangri, standing at 6,536 metres, via a new route.
The expedition, which began on 25 August, was conducted in alpine style without the use of fixed ropes or high-altitude porter support. The climbers faced significant challenges, including extreme cold, difficult terrain, and water shortages.
Led by veteran mountaineer Rudra Prasad Halder, with Satyarup Siddhanta serving as deputy leader, the team completed the mission through technical skill and self-supported planning. Siddhanta, who has previously summited Mount Everest, became the first Indian to climb both the Seven Summits and the Seven Volcanic Summits.
