Sonatrach and Eni sign decarbonization agreement in Algeria
Sonatrach and Eni have signed a new strategic agreement in Algiers aimed at accelerating the decarbonization of Algeria’s hydrocarbon industry. This memorandum of understanding builds upon a technological partnership established in 2023 and focuses on reducing the environmental footprint of oil and gas operations.
The collaboration prioritizes the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, with a specific emphasis on controlling methane leaks. Key initiatives include implementing Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs, reducing gas flaring, and improving the recovery and utilization of gas that would otherwise be wasted.
Beyond technical emission controls, the partnership intends to explore broader environmental strategies, including CO2 storage and reforestation efforts. Given Algeria’s role as a major gas supplier to Italy and Europe, these measures also carry strategic importance for continental energy security.
