Sonay Kartal reaches Wuhan Open quarter-finals after dominant win
British tennis player Sonay Kartal has reached the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open, marking a significant comeback following a six-month absence due to a stress fracture in her back. After missing three of this year's Grand Slams, the 24-year-old, currently ranked 170th, secured a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory over 15th seed Jasmine Paolini, winning the final 11 games consecutively.
This follows a previous victory over Belinda Bencic, which was one of the largest wins of Kartal's career by ranking. Her recent performance during the Asian hard-court swing has placed her on the verge of returning to the top 100 world rankings. Kartal is scheduled to face fifth seed Elina Svitolina in her next match.
In other tournament action, Maja Chwalinska defeated 10th seed Iva Jovic, and Diana Shnaider eliminated sixth seed Karolina Muchova. Additionally, Iga Swiatek advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Magdalena Frech.
