Mino of WINNER sentenced for military service law violations
Song Min-ho, a member of the K-pop group WINNER, has been sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspension for violating South Korea’s military service law. The Seoul Western District Court issued the ruling after finding that Song, known professionally as Mino, recorded 102 unauthorized absences during his service as a social service agent between March 2023 and December 2024.
Song served at a facility in the Mapo District of Seoul. During the proceedings, Song expressed remorse and cited personal struggles with depression and panic disorder, though he stated these should not serve as excuses for his actions. The court noted his admission of guilt and remorse as factors in the sentencing but emphasized that military service is a fundamental duty that must be performed faithfully.
A supervisor at the service center was also sentenced to ten months in prison, suspended for two years, for assisting Song by falsifying records to hide his absences. If the court's decision is upheld on appeal, Song may be required to complete an additional 102 days of military service to account for the time he was absent without authorization.
