Songdo public art sculpture sparks controversy over design
A new public art installation in Songdo International City has sparked significant controversy among local residents. The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority recently installed a large, brass-colored hand sculpture at Long Beach Park, costing approximately 200 million won.
The sculpture, measuring 4 to 5 meters in height, was designed to represent the sign language gesture for ‘I Love You’ (ILY), intended to serve as a landmark and photo zone for couples enjoying the area's sunset views. However, many residents have criticized the piece, with some claiming it resembles an offensive finger gesture or even Spider-Man shooting webs.
Critics have described the installation as an eyesore that clashes with the surrounding coastal scenery. In response to the influx of complaints and calls for its removal, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority stated they plan to better communicate the intended meaning of the sculpture to the public and improve explanatory signage.
