Songhees First Nation artist Clarence Dick designs BC Transit bus
Clarence “Butch” Dick, a Songhees First Nation Elder and renowned artist, has designed a wraparound artwork for a BC Transit electric bus. The design features a traditional Lekwengen origin story, depicting whales that transformed into sea wolves upon reaching the shore.
Working with BC Transit’s Indigenous Relations Manager and a graphic designer, Dick created the piece to promote cultural identity and community connection. The heavy-duty electric bus has entered service within the Victoria Regional Transit System in time for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. Passengers can find additional information on board regarding the artwork and Dick’s background as an educator.
