Songhees Nation hosts fifth annual South Island Powwow in Victoria
The Songhees Nation is hosting its fifth annual South Island Powwow in Victoria to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. Held on the homelands of the lək̓ʷəŋən people, the event honors survivors of Indian Residential and Day Schools, families affected by the Sixties Scoop, and children who died in these institutions.
Attendance has grown significantly since the inaugural event, which welcomed approximately 15,000 people. Last year, the number of attendees reached 22,000. The celebration includes performances by the Lekwungen Dancers and various category dances. Songhees Coun. Eugene Sam noted that the large turnout of people wearing orange reflects a public willingness to learn about the meaning of truth and reconciliation.
