Songjiangkou Hydropower Station sets world record for dam height

The Songjiangkou Hydropower Station, located on the Dadu River in Sichuan Province, China, has established itself as the world's tallest dam with a height of 315 meters. Developed by China Energy Investment Corp, the facility utilizes a rock-fill dam with an earth-gravel core to withstand high water pressure in complex geological terrain.

The project features a reservoir with a design capacity of 2.9 billion cubic meters, serving critical functions in water regulation, flood control, and energy security for the Dadu River basin.

Following the commencement of commercial operations for the first generator unit in June 2026, engineers successfully brought two additional units from phase one online within two months. This rapid deployment has contributed over 500 million kWh of clean electricity to the national grid, providing essential support to the Chengdu-Chongqing economic region during peak summer demand.
