Songkhla lakeside communities move toward World Heritage status
The National Committee for the Protection of the World Heritage Convention has approved the draft Preliminary Assessment (PA) documents for the “Songkhla and lakeside communities” cultural heritage site. This move aims to advance the area's candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status.
Nipon Boonyamanee, former Deputy Minister of Interior and former President of the Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization, expressed gratitude for the decision, noting that the push for recognition has been ongoing since 2014. The approval is viewed as a critical step in bringing the historical, cultural, and ecological values of the Songkhla Lake region to an international level.
The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning has been directed to submit the necessary documentation to the World Heritage Centre by the September 15, 2026 deadline. This process is expected to allow advisory bodies to provide guidance for the eventual submission of a full Nomination Dossier.
