Songshan Airport relocation sparks debate over aviation planning
Discussions regarding the relocation of Songshan Airport have intensified following political proposals. The Taiwan People's Party expressed general support for the direction of relocating the airport but emphasized that such a major project requires coordinated planning between central and local governments, involving multiple ministries to address military relocation, emergency disaster prevention, and impacts on island residents.
In response to these discussions, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications highlighted the ‘Songshan International Airport 2040 Overall Plan’ approved in November 2023. The Ministry noted that the airport holds a unique position, particularly in business aviation and domestic travel, handling approximately 50% of Taiwan's domestic flight volume.
Officials also addressed whether Taoyuan International Airport could absorb the demand if Songshan is relocated. The Ministry cautioned that Taoyuan's current infrastructure is designed for international routes; integrating domestic propeller planes and helicopters could disrupt operational efficiency due to speed differences between aircraft types.
