Sonia Gandhi defends Manmohan Singh following Supreme Court verdict
Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, has hailed former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a ‘most consequential’ leader following a Supreme Court verdict. The court upheld the CBI’s clean chit to Singh regarding the alleged coal block allocation scam and criticized a lower court for making adverse remarks against him without compelling reasons.
In an article published in The Indian Express, Gandhi described the legal vindication as the end of a coordinated ‘witch-hunt’ against Singh, involving various sectors of society and political opponents. She contrasted Singh’s record of integrity with the current Narendra Modi administration, accusing the government of misusing investigative agencies like the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to exert political pressure on opposition leaders.
Gandhi also defended Singh’s economic legacy, citing high growth rates, poverty reduction, and the implementation of key social welfare measures such as the Right to Education, MGNREGA, and the National Food Security Act. She criticized Prime Minister Modi for past undignified remarks made against Singh in Parliament, calling them a low point in Indian parliamentary history.
