Sonneberg district cancels plans for refugee shelter in former hospital

The Sonneberg district in Germany has decided against establishing a collective refugee shelter in the former hospital in Neuhaus am Rennweg. District Administrator Robert Sesselmann, who previously suggested the location, stated that the decision was made due to economic considerations and the need to review housing options.

Local concerns regarding the distance between the proposed site and essential services, such as police and administration, also influenced the reversal. The district is now evaluating decentralized housing options, such as placing refugees in private apartments, to manage costs and logistics. This review comes amid a general decline in the number of new asylum seekers in both Thuringia and Germany.
