Sonoma Coast autumn scenery from Duncans Mills to Bodega Bay

The Sonoma Coast in California offers a distinct autumnal landscape stretching from the small village of Duncans Mills to Bodega Bay. Duncans Mills, a settlement of approximately 20 residents, maintains a historic atmosphere with landmarks such as Christopher Queen’s Hotel, DeCarly’s General Store, and the former John Orr saloon.

Further west along Highway 1, Bodega Bay features a coastal landscape of golden hills, wooden houses, and a fishing port. The area gained international cinematic fame after Alfred Hitchcock filmed ‘The Birds’ there in 1963, utilizing the bay's isolation, fog, and quiet port to create a thriller setting. Today, the region serves as a destination for those seeking to avoid overtourism, offering mild autumn weather and hiking opportunities along the cliffs of Bodega Head.
