Sonoma State University to relaunch athletics and restore academic programs
Sonoma State University is transitioning from a period of severe financial retrenchment to a phase of "strategic investment" following a $24 million budget deficit that led to significant cuts in early 2025. After receiving a one-time $45 million funding boost from the state of California, the university is working to stabilize its finances and restore academic and athletic programs.
Interim provost Stacey Bosick reported that seven of 19 previously suspended academic programs are being reinstated in some form. Additionally, the university has announced the relaunch of its NCAA Division II athletics department, scheduled to begin in the 2027-28 academic year. The athletic relaunch will include 10 men’s and women’s sports, such as softball, and will compete in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
University President Michael Spagna stated that the return of athletics is part of a broader effort to address a 13 percent enrollment decline and enhance student engagement. The startup cost for the athletics program is estimated at approximately $2.8 million, which will be funded through student fees, tuition, fundraising, and sponsorships.
