Sonora authorities increase surveillance to combat illegal checkpoints

Authorities in Sonora are conducting tactical deployments and surveillance operations along Federal Highway 15 to identify and prevent illegal or fake checkpoints. These actions follow citizen reports regarding unauthorized stops and investigations into robberies.

State Prosecutor Gustavo Salas Chávez emphasized that authorized checkpoints must be fully identified, follow defined procedures, and use QR codes to allow travelers to verify the inspecting authority. He noted that inspections cannot be improvised or clandestine. Participating agencies include the National Guard, the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the Attorney General's Office (FGR), and state security forces.

Local business leaders have expressed concern regarding the appearance of security personnel. Francisco Laso Castro, president of the Sonora Association of Hotels and Motels, stated that hooded individuals at inspection points have caused fear among tourists, particularly American visitors, potentially damaging the state's image. While acknowledging the necessity of road security, he urged authorities to review their processes to ensure personnel are clearly identifiable.
