Sonora economy grows through mining and industrial expansion
The state of Sonora is experiencing significant economic expansion driven by its mining and industrial sectors. Mining in the region accounts for approximately one-third of Mexico's total mineral volume and 45% of its total value. High-value metals such as copper, gold, and silver produced in Sonora represent 58% of the total value of Mexico's mining exports. Key operations include Grupo México’s Buenavista del Cobre in Cananea and Coeur Mining’s Las Chispas, which was acquired for US$1.7 billion.
Complementing the mining sector, Sonora’s industrial activity grew by 2.4% annually in April, according to data from INEGI. Advanced manufacturing has also seen a rise, growing 2.1% annually and increasing its share of the state's economy from 17.5% in 2021 to 22.5% in the first quarter of 2026. Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño attributed these trends to industrial policies aimed at improving infrastructure and attracting new investments.
