Sonora government reaches agreement to end prolonged hunger strike

A prolonged protest and hunger strike led by the association Covafam has ended following agreements with the Sonora state government and legislative powers. The mobilization, which included a 129-day sit-in and a 99-day hunger strike by lawyer Jorge García Herrera, aimed to advance early childhood education in the state.

Under the reached agreements, the state will initiate procedures with the Secretariat of Education and Culture, the State Civil Protection Coordination, and the State Commission for Sanitary Risk Protection to implement early childhood programs by 2027. Additionally, the agreement includes the allocation of 2 million pesos and the creation of the State Early Childhood System using 2027 fiscal year resources.

Jorge García Herrera reported significant health impacts due to the hunger strike, including a weight loss of approximately 20 kilograms and damage to his digestive and immune systems. The protest concluded after a meeting with Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño to establish concrete commitments for the welfare of children in Sonora.
