Sonora Government rejects changes to June 5 law for Covafam childcare centers

State authorities in Sonora announced that the June 5 law governing childcare facilities will not be modified or softened. The law, enacted after the ABC nursery tragedy, aims to guarantee physical safety and civil protection for children, and officials said its provisions are non‑negotiable.

Secretary of Government Adolfo Salazar Razo reported that the state registers 18 Covafam‑affiliated childcare centers. Of those, three are suspended, two operate under restrictions and the remaining 13 have administrative observations. No center is free of violations. inspections cited missing emergency exits and other deficiencies.

Congressional leader Alejandra López Noriega added that Covafam members did not participate in the latest annual call and failed to meet several statutory requirements. The government also noted that police detained Covafam members after a road‑block incident in Hermosillo and transferred them to the public prosecutor.
