Sonora Governor Durazo advances Yaqui Justice Plan with land restitution and new public defender office

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño led a work session in Vícam, the Yaqui community’s main settlement, together with Supreme Court President Hugo Aguilar Ortiz and federal officials. The meeting reviewed progress on the federal Yaqui Justice Plan, announced a total of 18.356 billion pesos allocated for water, education and infrastructure projects, and confirmed the restitution of more than 45,000 hectares of land to the Yaqui people, including a decree delivering 239 hectares of the Rancho La Matanza in Bahía de Lobos.

A new office of the Instituto Federal de Defensoría Pública (IFDP) was inaugurated to provide intercultural legal assistance to Indigenous and vulnerable groups. Projects discussed included the Yaqui Aqueduct and the expansion of Irrigation District 018. Cultural activities such as a university Yaqui mariachi performance and traditional dances accompanied the official proceedings.
