Mental health initiatives expand across Latin America
In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, various governments and health institutions across Latin America and other regions have launched or reinforced mental health initiatives.
In Mexico, authorities in Baja California and Hermosillo have highlighted 24-hour crisis lines and community mental health centers, while the national health secretariat is training professionals using international guidelines. In Guatemala, a new 1582 helpline and WhatsApp service provide psychological first aid. In the Dominican Republic, the Alejandro Cabral Hospital has reopened its Mental Health Crisis Intervention Unit to serve the southern region.
Argentina has seen widespread activity, including the implementation of a national 24/7 mental health helpline, provincial plans in Buenos Aires to expand services, and educational workshops in Formosa and La Pampa focusing on adolescent consumption and emotional well-being. Additionally, legislative efforts in Chaco aim to create a provincial network for 24-hour community mental health care.
Other regional efforts include Mendoza’s comprehensive plan for police and prison staff, and local municipal programs in Luján and Villa de Pozos providing free psychological support and school-based outreach.
