Sonora improves rural health with new midwifery committee and permanent doctor in Cajeme

The government of Sonora, through the State Health Secretariat, established the State Midwifery Committee in the community of Esperanza, Cajeme. The committee, chaired by traditional midwife representative María Francisca Matuz Muñoz and overseen by Health Secretary José Luis Alomía Zegarra, will meet every two months to coordinate and support ancestral midwifery practices across the state, integrating them with public health services.

In the same municipality, the Ejido El Henequén health centre finally received a resident physician after more than two decades without a permanent doctor. Delegates led by Imelda Oroz Beltrán reported that the clinic now has air‑conditioning and regular hours, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving roughly 300 residents and reducing the need to travel for basic care. Both initiatives aim to strengthen maternal and general health services for rural communities in Sonora, Mexico.
