Sonora integrates into federal passenger rail reactivation project
The state of Sonora is joining a federal government initiative to reactivate passenger rail services by 2030. The project focuses on the Mexico-Nogales route, which includes key stops in Guaymas, Empalme, and Hermosillo.
Construction for the segments involving Guaymas, specifically the Mochis-Guaymas and Guaymas-Hermosillo stretches, is scheduled to begin in 2027 as part of the third phase of the federal strategy. The project aims for full consolidation by 2030. In Nogales, complementary works such as the construction of a tunnel connecting to the border line are reportedly nearly complete.
This initiative marks a return to passenger rail for the region, which has lacked such service since the privatization of national railways in 1998.
