Sonora leads gold production in Mexico with 30.3% market share

Sonora has established itself as the leading gold producer in Mexico, accounting for 30.3% of the nation's total gold output. This data, according to the 2026 annual report from the Mexican Mining Chamber (Camimex) and official figures from INEGI, highlights the state's role as the country's mining hub.

Key municipalities driving this production include Caborca, which contributed 14.5% of the national volume, and Sahuaripa, which accounted for 6.4%. Roberto Sitten Ayala, president of the Association of Mining, Metallurgical and Geological Engineers of Mexico (AIMMGM) Sonora District, noted that these results reflect the efforts of over 140,000 families and significant productive investment.

Sonora leads a group of five states with the highest mining activity in Mexico, alongside Zacatecas, Guerrero, Chihuahua, and Durango. To maintain competitiveness and industrial capacity, Sitten Ayala emphasized the necessity of reactivating mining exploration permits to ensure the legal certainty required for long-term investment.
