Sonora melon and watermelon harvests face disruption from rains

Heavy rains in Sonora, Mexico, driven by the Pineapple Express phenomenon, are expected to cause short-term harvest disruptions for cantaloupe, honeydew, and seedless watermelon. Experts anticipate delays of 48 to 72 hours as crews are forced out of muddy fields to prevent soil compaction and physical damage to mature fruit.

The weather volatility in growing regions such as Hermosillo, Caborca, and Guaymas is attributed to tropical moisture shifts and late fall cold fronts. These disruptions are expected to create immediate gaps in picking schedules and slow the movement of produce through Nogales.

While the Mexican melon season is starting on its usual timeline, industry observers are monitoring how these storms might also impact production in Southern California and Western Arizona.
