Sonora mining sector faces stability risks and reliance on two key copper mines

The mining industry in Sonora, Mexico, underpins about 45% of the country's total mineral output, generating roughly US$17.5 billion annually. Production is concentrated in two flagship projects: the open‑pit Buenavista del Cobre copper mine operated by Grupo México, and the underground Las Chispas mine, recently acquired by Coeur Mining for US$1.7 billion and known for high‑grade silver and gold.

Geotechnical conditions in the region pose major engineering challenges. Sonora’s complex geology—interbedded igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, numerous faults and variable groundwater tables—creates high risks of slope instability and foundation failures. Accurate modeling of rock mechanics and hydro‑static pressures is essential to prevent massive landslides that could halt production, endanger workers, and cause costly equipment damage. Ongoing water scarcity and regulatory pressures, especially at Buenavista del Cobre, add further operational constraints.
