Sonora population ages, prompting new elderly services

Data from INEGI’s 2025 Intercensal Survey indicates that the population of Sonora is aging. The median age in the state has risen from 30 in 2020 to 32 in 2025, while the fertility rate has decreased from 2.1 to 1.9 children per woman. Additionally, there is a notable increase in single-person households, which rose from 14.4% to 17.7% during the same period.

In response to these demographic shifts, the Government of Sonora, through the Instituto Sonorense para la Atención de los Adultos Mayores (ISAAM), has partnered with the State Civil Registry to improve services for seniors. New measures include the free issuance and rectification of birth certificates for individuals aged 60 and older. To ensure accessibility, dedicated service windows will be established to allow elderly citizens to complete these procedures without waiting in long lines.
