Sonora posts 7.2% manufacturing growth, launches investment promotion committee

Sonora's manufacturing sector recorded a 7.2% year‑over‑year increase in March 2026, ranking second among Mexican states and first among the northern border entities, according to data from INEGI. Growth was driven by a 13.5% rise in intermediate manufacturing, an 8.8% rise in advanced manufacturing and a 1.1% rise in basic manufacturing, while overall industrial activity grew 2.1%.

Governor Alfonso Durazo highlighted the confidence of national and international investors and emphasized Sonora’s strategic location, near‑shoring potential, and access to the United States and the Pacific. He and Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard inaugurated the Committee Promotor de Inversiones, a body aimed at attracting high‑value projects in advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, electromobility, clean energy and logistics, and strengthening coordination between state and federal governments.

The committee is expected to boost employment, foster new industrial projects, and build on Sonora’s leading position in mining exports, which approached US$1 billion in the first quarter of the year.
