Mexico resumes cattle exports to U.S. via Sonora border
Mexico has resumed live cattle exports to the United States, starting at the Agua Prieta, Sonora border crossing. The reopening follows a period of restrictions due to the presence of the New World screwworm fly.
Authorities have implemented rigorous sanitary measures to prevent the spread of the parasite. These include a traceability system monitoring cattle from birth to their arrival in the U.S., the use of microchips for identification, and the reinforcement of sterile fly dispersal in Sonora and Chihuahua to maintain a 200-kilometer safety zone. Additionally, 40.4 million sterile flies were recently released in Chihuahua to combat the pest.
To support the increased trade, inspection capacity at the Agua Prieta quarantine station is being doubled with federal assistance. Furthermore, a new livestock review center is under construction in Hermosillo to expand export capabilities. The resumption of trade is expected to proceed gradually, with shipment volumes increasing from initial levels toward a target of 1,500 heads of cattle daily.
