Sonora search collective finds clandestine grave and shell casings

The Buscadoras de la Frontera Nogales collective reported the discovery of a clandestine grave in Sonoyta, Sonora. During a search in a difficult-to-access area prompted by an anonymous tip, searchers found human bone remains and more than 50 spent shell casings.

In addition to the remains and casings, investigators recovered a black sneaker and a comb at the site. All evidence has been handed over to forensic authorities. This discovery follows a similar finding five months ago in the Felipe Ángeles ejido, where eight sets of remains were located.

Data from the report ‘Trazar la Ausencia, Caminar la Esperanza’ indicates that between January 2006 and September 2024, approximately 2,844 clandestine graves, 8,341 bodies, and over 52,000 human remains have been located in Mexico. Sonora is among the five states with the highest number of reported clandestine grave findings.
