Sonora State Congress reviews new hiking and adventure tourism law

The Sonora State Congress has initiated an open parliament process to discuss a proposed law for the promotion, professionalization, and safety of hiking and adventure tourism. Introduced by Deputy Marcela Valenzuela Nevárez, the legislation aims to establish clear operational standards, risk management controls, and mandatory training and certification for service providers.

If approved, Sonora would become the first Mexican state to have a specific regulatory framework for these activities. The proposal includes the creation of a State Registry of Guides and Adventure Tourism Service Providers. The law would cover various natural destinations, including Cerro del Bachoco and Cerro de la Cementera in Hermosillo, Cerro Tetakawi in San Carlos, the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve in Puerto Peñasco, and the Alacrán Canyon in Yécora.

A socialization event held near the La Sauceda Urban Forest included participation from civil society organizations, environmental groups, athletes, and citizens. Government representatives from the Secretariat of Economy and Tourism, Civil Protection commissions, and ecological and sports commissions also attended to review observations regarding the initiative.
