Sonora State Congress reviews press freedom initiatives

The Sonora State Congress is conducting a socialization process for legislative initiatives aimed at protecting press freedom. Through the “Periodistas libres y protegidos” forum in San Luis Río Colorado, Deputy Juan Pablo Arenivar Martínez (PAN) presented two primary proposals to strengthen journalistic practice in the state.

The first initiative seeks to recognize journalism as a strategic and indispensable profession through a reform to the State Political Constitution. The second proposal aims to incorporate the crime of intimidation against journalists into the Penal Code to prevent, address, and sanction behaviors intended to obstruct or limit journalistic work.

Participants, including reporters, independent communicators, and content creators, expressed concerns regarding current risks to the profession, such as censorship, threats, and pressure from various levels of government. Discussions also covered the definition of a journalist and the role of influencers and content creators in the current media landscape.
