Sonos launches $299 Play portable speaker blending home and travel use
Sonos introduced the Play speaker, priced at $299, as a hybrid Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth device intended for both home environments and on‑the‑go listening. Launched in March 2026, the cylindrical speaker can sit on a kitchen counter or patio and be taken outdoors, switching to Bluetooth when away from Wi‑Fi. It features an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, USB‑C charging that can also power a phone, a 24‑hour battery life with a user‑replaceable cell, and the ability to group up to four Play units for larger sound.
The product marks Sonos’s first major hardware release after a period of turmoil that included a problematic app overhaul, the departure of CEO Patrick Spence in early 2025, and a leadership change to board member Tom Conrad. The Play aims to reinforce the Sonos ecosystem, offering automatic Trueplay tuning, seamless docking via a proprietary stand, and integration with existing Sonos systems. Reviewers place it between Sonos’s smaller Roam 2 and larger Move 2, providing a middle tier for consumers seeking versatile, premium portable audio.
