Sony advances imaging technology with IMX929 sensor shipments

Sony Semiconductor Solutions has reached new milestones in imaging hardware with the sample shipment of the IMX929 sensor and ongoing technical scrutiny regarding the S50 Pro architecture.

Sony has begun shipping samples of the monochrome IMX929, a 50.7MP Type 1.8 global shutter sensor. This hardware is capable of high-speed 8K capture, reaching frame rates of approximately 201.5 fps at 10-bit output. The sensor features a 28.1 mm diagonal and a 4:3 active image area, allowing manufacturers to evaluate its ability to move massive amounts of image data simultaneously without the distortions associated with rolling shutters.

Separately, the S50 Pro CMOS array has entered its production lifecycle, prompting debate among engineers regarding its silicon origin. While the device matches the performance benchmarks of the Sony Starvis 2 architecture—specifically the signal-to-noise ratio and quantum efficiency of the IMX585—the manufacturer has not officially confirmed if it utilizes Sony-branded dies or a third-party equivalent.
