Gaming industry shifts toward digital models as Gamescom expects record exhibitors

The video game industry is facing a significant transition as digital distribution becomes the dominant model. Sony has announced it will cease production of physical PlayStation discs by early 2028, a move that has sparked concern among researchers and academics regarding the preservation of gaming as a cultural heritage. Experts warn that the disappearance of physical media could hinder long-term archiving and research access.

In tandem with these industry shifts, the Gamescom trade fair in Cologne is set to reach a new milestone. Organizers Koelnmesse and the industry association 'game' expect a record-breaking more than 1,600 exhibitors for the 2026 event. While the physical exhibition space remains stable, the focus is shifting toward digital reach and community engagement.

Additionally, the German gaming association 'game' has issued a formal declaration titled ‘Lust auf Zukunft: Potenziale von Games nutzen’. The document calls on policymakers and businesses to better support Europe as a leading gaming production hub, emphasizing the need for reliable political frameworks, improved youth protection systems, and the recognition of gaming as a significant economic and cultural force.
