Sony and Microsoft shift toward digital-first gaming models

Major gaming corporations Sony and Microsoft are implementing significant shifts toward digital-first services and hardware changes. Sony has confirmed that production of physical discs for new PlayStation games will end in January 2028. While existing titles can still be produced, the move reflects a transition toward digital distribution via the PlayStation Store. Additionally, unverified social media rumors suggest Sony may consider selling base PS5 consoles without the DualSense controller starting in 2027.

Microsoft is also adjusting its service models. Xbox Cloud Gaming is expected to introduce monthly usage limits starting in November 2026. Under proposed tiers, players may be restricted to 5 hours for Essential, 10 hours for Premium, and 15 hours for Ultimate subscribers per month. Reports suggest these limits may stem from the high infrastructure costs associated with supporting artificial intelligence services.

Furthermore, industry trends indicate a potential move toward all-digital Xbox hardware. Microsoft faces challenges in sourcing optical disc drives as demand for Blu-ray technology declines. This shift toward digital ecosystems is expected to continue as both companies explore new hardware iterations, including potential handheld devices.
