Sony and TSMC to form $4.69bn image sensor joint venture in Japan
Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) have signed a binding agreement to establish a joint venture named Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. The company will be based in Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors, primarily for smartphones.
The venture involves a total planned investment of approximately 747 billion yen (roughly $4.69 billion). Sony will be the controlling shareholder, contributing about 465 billion yen through a combination of cash and the transfer of its existing semiconductor fabrication assets in Kumamoto. TSMC will contribute approximately 282 billion yen in cash.
Under the partnership, Sony will lead core technology development, product planning, and design, while TSMC will provide advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise. Mass production is targeted to begin in 2029. The companies are also in discussions with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry regarding potential government subsidies to support the project's production capacity.
