Sony and TSMC to invest $6.3 billion in Japanese chip venture

Sony Group and TSMC are reportedly finalizing a joint venture to invest approximately 1 trillion yen ($6.32 billion) in next-generation image sensor manufacturing in Japan. The partnership, which involves a non-binding memorandum of understanding, aims to combine Sony’s design expertise with TSMC’s advanced manufacturing capabilities.

The planned facility will be located in Kumamoto Prefecture, specifically at Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ existing plant in Koshi City. Under the proposed structure, Sony would hold a majority 60% stake, while TSMC would hold 40%. The companies aim to formally establish the joint venture by the end of Sony’s fiscal year 2026, with mass production potentially beginning as early as 2029.

The venture is targeting high-performance applications, including smartphones and the emerging field of 'physical AI,' which encompasses sensors for robotics and autonomous vehicles. The companies are reportedly in discussions with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry regarding potential subsidies to support the project.
