Sony to End PlayStation Discs by 2028, CFO Lin Tao Says Console Will Coexist with PC
Sony announced that it will cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, a decision confirmed during its first‑quarter FY2026 earnings call. Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao explained that the disc format is not a core differentiator between consoles and PCs. He highlighted Sony’s strengths in curated content, a stable gaming environment and lower price points compared with high‑end gaming PCs, adding that the PlayStation platform can peacefully coexist with PC gaming.
The move follows a wave of consumer backlash, including petitions and threats of boycott, but Sony maintains that the shift to a fully digital future will not harm the platform’s appeal. Existing titles on disc will remain sellable, and older consoles will still support physical media, but all new releases from 2028 onward will be digital‑only.
