PlayStation faces backlash over plans to end physical game disc production

Sony Interactive Entertainment is facing significant industry and consumer backlash following its announcement to phase out the production of new physical PlayStation 5 game discs starting in January 2028. In response to the controversy, reports indicate that Sony has conducted an unusually large survey of game developers to gather feedback on the potential impact of ending physical media distribution.

Simultaneously, Sony released a public survey for adult users to gauge satisfaction with the PS5 ecosystem. While the survey did not explicitly mention the disc phase-out, many users utilized open text fields to protest the decision, citing concerns over game preservation, the used game market, and ownership rights.

Industry leaders, including Kenzo Saruhashi, CEO of Nippon Ichi Software, have expressed concern that the shift threatens business models reliant on collector editions. Saruhashi noted that while Sony appears to be listening to feedback, the company may instead move toward selling physical boxes containing only digital download codes. Additionally, Sony has filed a patent for technology that would allow PlayStation controllers to act as payment card readers, potentially simplifying the digital purchase process.
