Sony expands AI integration across PlayStation Studios
Sony is actively expanding the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning across its PlayStation Studios to enhance character creation, animation, and game testing. A recent job listing for a Lead Character Tools Engineer within the PlayStation Central Technology team highlights a strategic push to integrate AI into workflows involving rigging, 3D model processing, and engine integration.
The company is already utilizing several AI-driven tools. Mockingbird, an AI-powered facial animation tool, significantly accelerates the processing of performance capture data, reducing tasks that previously took hours to nearly instantaneous results. This technology has been adopted by studios such as Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio, and was used in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. Additionally, Sony has developed a system that converts video footage of real hairstyles into detailed 3D hair models.
Sony leadership has emphasized that these technologies are intended to automate repetitive tasks rather than replace human creativity. Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated that AI should reduce manual labor to allow developers to work more efficiently, while the core vision and emotional impact of games remain driven by human talent and actors. Other AI applications include the Sophy racer in Gran Turismo and PSSR technology on the PS5 Pro, which uses machine learning to enhance image quality.
