Sony faces lawsuit over alleged PlayStation digital monopoly

Sony is facing legal action in the Netherlands as the Dutch consumer organization Stichting Massaschade & Consument (SM&C) has filed a lawsuit alleging an illegal monopoly over the sale of digital PlayStation games. The legal challenge, part of the ‘Fair PlayStation’ initiative, accuses the company of abusing its dominant market position to exert excessive control over digital pricing, sales, and commercial conditions.

The lawsuit has gained international support from the ‘Stop Killing Games’ movement and the preservation website ‘DoesItPlay’. These groups argue that Sony’s decision to end the production of physical PlayStation disc media by January 2028 will exacerbate the issue by forcing consumers into a closed digital ecosystem, further limiting consumer rights and game preservation.

Community reaction has been significant, with many gamers expressing a desire to migrate to PC and Steam to maintain greater control over their game libraries and hardware. Similar legal scrutiny regarding monopolistic practices is also reportedly ongoing in the United Kingdom.
