Sony faces Mexican antitrust lawsuit over PlayStation disc production shutdown

Mexican federal legislator Iraís Reyes, together with Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio, filed a formal complaint with the Federal Competition Commission (COFECE) on August 4, alleging that Sony’s decision to end production of physical discs for PlayStation games violates Mexico’s antitrust law. The lawmakers argue that the move gives Sony exclusive control over pricing and sales conditions, eliminates the used‑game market and deprives low‑income consumers of affordable access to games.

Sony’s chief financial officer Lin Tao said the decision was taken after careful consideration of the broader digitalisation of content, and the company pledged to listen to consumer concerns. The complaint highlights broader issues of digital ownership and market competition in Mexico’s gaming sector.
