Sony faces scrutiny over digital game ownership and physical media future
Sony is facing scrutiny regarding the legal definition of digital game ownership. In recent legal disputes, the company has argued that consumers do not own digital games but instead receive a revocable license to use them. However, an investigation by Consumer Rights Wiki identified 44 instances where Sony’s own official documentation, including PlayStation Store listings and support pages, uses the term “possess” or “own” to describe digital acquisitions.
This debate coincides with a broader shift in Sony’s business strategy toward digital distribution. Currently, approximately 82% of PS4 and PS5 game sales are digital. There is ongoing speculation regarding the future of physical media, with discussions suggesting Sony could potentially end physical game production by 2028. This transition raises concerns among collectors and users who rely on physical discs for reselling, lending, or long-term preservation.
