Sony faces scrutiny over digital game ownership claims
Consumer Rights Wiki is documenting instances where Sony and PlayStation have used terms like “buy,” “purchase,” or “own” to describe digital games. This archive serves as a response to a class action lawsuit filed in California, which alleges that Sony’s storefront language misleads consumers into believing they are acquiring digital ownership rather than a revocable license.
In legal filings, Sony has argued that “reasonable consumers” should not expect to obtain actual ownership of digital goods, asserting that transactions provide a limited software license. The lawsuit contends that using ownership-related terminology violates consumer laws by implying an unrestricted interest in the digital product.
The Consumer Rights Wiki has compiled a list of over 30 examples from official Sony websites, support pages, and the PlayStation Blog where the company refers to games as something players “own.” This collection includes screenshots and archived links to preserve the original wording in case of future edits or removals.
