Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will cease production of physical game discs for new PlayStation releases starting January 2028. The decision ends the manufacture of discs for future titles and will shift distribution to a fully digital model.

In response, gamers worldwide organized a coordinated boycott called #PSBlackout, scheduled for 23–30 August 2026. Participants are urged to turn off their PS4/PS5 consoles, avoid logging into the PlayStation Network, and refrain from purchasing digital games or services during the week. The protest was promoted by the preservation group DoesItPlay and backed by a petition titled “Don’t Kill the Disc,” which has gathered more than 345,000 signatures.

Developers such as Sandfall Interactive’s Guillaume Broche, director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, called the move “very sad,” citing the cultural value of physical media and the loss of collectible ownership. An Anonymous threat claiming to target Sony over the disc phase‑out was also reported. Sony has not issued a comment on the protest.
