Sony implements mandatory PS5 firmware update to combat jailbreaking
Sony is reportedly enforcing a critical firmware update for PlayStation 5 consoles, moving users from version 14.00 to 14.10. This mandatory update appears to be a direct response to an increase in console jailbreaking and modding, which allows users to play unauthorized games and access older titles from the PS2 and PS3 eras.
Users who decline the update report being unable to connect to the PlayStation Network (PSN) or access online gaming features. While those remaining on older firmware may maintain the ability to jailbreak their consoles, they risk losing online connectivity. Conversely, those who upgrade to the new firmware will be unable to modify their systems.
Industry observers suggest these security measures are also intended to protect upcoming major releases, such as Grand Theft Auto VI, which is believed to require the latest firmware to function. Despite these efforts, some experts believe the security measures may eventually be bypassed using AI-driven tools.
