Sony integrates generative AI into PlayStation game development
Sony has confirmed that generative artificial intelligence tools are now being used in the development of PlayStation games. The AI assists with repetitive tasks, creates synthetic assets such as placeholder voices and interim 3D models, and speeds up iteration cycles without replacing creative staff. Executives Hideaki Nishino and Hiroki Totoki said AI is intended to let developers focus on storytelling, gameplay design and artistic innovation rather than cost cutting. Specific tools mentioned include "Mockingbird," which generates facial animations from performance‑capture data, and internal prototypes that employ AI‑generated assets during early production stages. Sony also foresees AI shaping future gameplay, enabling richer virtual worlds and more dynamic non‑player characters. The company emphasized that AI will become a core pillar of PlayStation’s long‑term strategy, complementing broader industry moves toward AI‑assisted content creation.
