Sony Interactive Entertainment files patent for AI-driven matchmaking

Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent titled ‘Using ML Models to Match Players Together for Game Play’ to improve the gaming experience through artificial intelligence.

The proposed system aims to move beyond simple skill-based matchmaking by using machine learning to create personalized user profiles. According to the patent documentation, the AI could analyze various data points, including time spent in specific games, skill levels, purchase history, shopping cart contents, friend lists, social media activity, and search history.

By utilizing this data, the system could identify compatible playstyles or suggest complementary skills to form more balanced teams. For example, a player who prefers support roles could be matched with specialists in other functions. The patent even includes visual representations of user compatibility rates, such as 80%, 85%, or 90%.
