Sony introduces QSSR AI upscaling for standard PlayStation 5

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the rollout of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-driven upscaling technology designed specifically for the standard PlayStation 5 console. Developed in collaboration with AMD through Project Amethyst, QSSR serves as a streamlined version of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Because the standard PS5 lacks the specialized machine-learning hardware found in the Pro model, QSSR utilizes a simplified neural network architecture and hand-tuned implementation to maximize performance on existing hardware. This allows games to be rendered at lower internal resolutions and reconstructed with higher detail and temporal stability, improving visual clarity without the heavy computational cost of PSSR.

The first two titles to support QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both of which received updates to include the technology as a graphical option. Sony intends to make QSSR available to all PlayStation developers to enhance the visual experience of future titles on the base console.
